An average male will burn between 2000 and 3000 Calories per day. Carrying a 12kg rucksack over uneven sometimes hilly terrain, will mean a burn of 2500 plus.
Balancing weight of food being carried to energy received is difficult. My solution is to have a repetitive menu giving me 2094 Calories, supplemented with food obtained and eaten in towns/villages. From experience I know that I can go for several days on this Calorie intake, but when I do get to a restaurant, pub or café, I make sure that any deficiencies are fully restored.
